Dad Thanks Medical Heroes After Seven-Month Hospital Battle

UPDATE: A father has publicly thanked the medical teams who saved his life after an arduous seven-month hospital stay, including a harrowing four months in a coma. Brian Wands, 45, was first admitted to Glasgow Royal Infirmary in March 2022 due to excruciating pain from pancreatitis.

Brian’s journey began with a sudden collapse at home, leaving him in critical condition. After six weeks at Hairmyres Hospital, he was transferred to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he underwent numerous life-saving procedures, spent 84 days in intensive care, and received an astonishing 95-unit blood transfusion. He faced the daunting challenge of relearning to walk and was dependent on drip-feeding for over two years.

In a heartfelt letter addressed to the health board, Brian expressed immense gratitude for the dedicated staff who played pivotal roles in his recovery. He specifically named lifesaving consultants, including Euan Dickson, Fiona Leitch, and Phil Stevens, as well as intensive care consultant Dr. Tara Quasim, who remained by his side during critical moments.

Brian’s tribute emphasized the collective effort of the hospital teams: “I was kept alive by people who combined skill with compassion, consistency, and courage,” he wrote. He recognized the contributions of physiotherapist Jill Meldrum for her kindness during his rehabilitation and staff nurse Lesley Tough for her profound impact on his recovery.

Remarkably, Brian has now regained a fitness level that seemed unimaginable during his darkest days. He is currently engaging in daily Pilates sessions and can hold a five-minute plank. He is also preparing for his first family holiday in three years—a significant milestone for him and his loved ones.

The InS:PIRE clinic, which assisted the family in understanding the traumatic experience and supported their journey back to normalcy, also received a special mention in his letter. Brian stressed the importance of the entire health care team, stating, “To everyone involved—consultants, nurses, healthcare support workers, and beyond—please accept my deepest thanks.”

Brian’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the vital role of healthcare professionals in saving lives. As he continues his recovery at home, he reflects daily on the extraordinary efforts made to ensure he could return to his family and work.

This inspiring tribute highlights the urgent need for recognition of the healthcare community’s dedication, especially as they navigate the ongoing challenges posed by patient care and recovery.
