Convicted Criminal Strikes Baby in Murder Attempt; Sentencing Next Month

URGENT UPDATE: A 25-year-old man has been charged with attempting to murder a three-month-old baby, leaving the infant with life-altering injuries. The shocking incident occurred while the child’s mother slept on March 11, 2025, in South Lanarkshire.

Ethan Gwynne, a convicted criminal with a history of violence, has admitted to the crime through his lawyer, Shahid Latif, at the High Court in Glasgow. He will face sentencing next month, as authorities reveal the horrifying details of the attack.

Desperate 999 calls were made around 4:30 PM, alerting paramedics that the baby was in distress. When emergency responders arrived, they found Gwynne holding the child, who was described as “critically unwell.” Prosecutor Nicola Gilchrist reported that the baby was pale, cold, and struggling to breathe.

The court heard that Gwynne had been left to care for the child, claiming he would listen for the baby while the mother rested. However, the mother awoke to a nightmare: Gwynne in a panic, the baby lying unresponsive on the bed. She immediately instructed him to call for an ambulance.

After the attack, Gwynne confessed to his grandfather that he had struck the baby on the head but expressed confusion over his actions. He later told the baby’s mother he was “sorry” for what happened.

The infant sustained serious injuries, including skull fractures and a brain bleed, which a senior doctor classified as “abusive head trauma.” Following the assault, the baby spent three weeks in intensive care and is now showing some developmental progress. However, experts warn that he will likely face significant mobility challenges and possible long-term learning disabilities.

Ms. Gilchrist emphasized the severe ramifications of the traumatic brain injury, stating, “The boy is likely to have long-term consequences… it is possible that he will have such significant degree of neuro-disability that it would be life-limiting.”

As the court proceedings unfolded, Gwynne appeared visibly emotional, dabbing his eyes as the prosecutor recounted the harrowing details of his actions. Lord Renucci has remanded him in custody, with sentencing set for next month in Dundee.

This deeply troubling case raises urgent questions about child safety and the responsibilities of caregivers. The community is left in shock, and many are calling for justice for the innocent victim of this violent act.
