Celebrated Artist Luka Lagator Unveils New Exhibition in Cetinje

UPDATE: Renowned Montenegrin artist and caricaturist Luka Lagator just unveiled a stunning new exhibition at the Modern Gallery in Cetinje, marking a milestone of 60 years of artistic creation and his 80th birthday. The event took place last night, underscoring Lagator’s profound connection to his hometown.

This exhibition, titled “Sa apsurdom treba živjeti” (One Must Live with Absurdity), goes beyond mere artistic display; it serves as a poignant reflection on the human condition, emphasizing the absurdity inherent in life. Lagator dedicated his artwork to Cetinje, not as a mere backdrop but as a vital state of consciousness, where history continuously dialogues with the present.

During the opening, Lagator performed “Sisyphus’s Path,” where he symbolically carried a massive stone adorned with engravings and photographs representing both historical and contemporary Cetinje. “Sisyphus is not just a mythical figure; he embodies the universal struggle of modern humanity,” Lagator stated. This powerful metaphor highlights the continuous effort individuals put forth in their lives, often facing inevitable setbacks.

Lagator explained, “Each living being on Earth is a ‘Sisyphus to another Sisyphus.’ We all push our own stones up a personal hill, striving to reach the top, only to face a new fall.” He further emphasized that the moment the stone rolls down is not a defeat but a chance for deep reflection on existence.

The performance aimed at provoking audiences to confront the absurdity of life as an inescapable part of the human experience. “Becoming aware of the absurd is crucial because it’s the only way to truly live with it,” Lagator asserted.

The exhibition also featured insights from art historians Ljiljana Zekovic and Ljiljana Karadzic, as well as caricaturist Darko Drljevic. The evening was enriched by a musical performance from soprano Zorana Latkovic and guitarist Nikola Pejovic, adding a cultural layer to this significant event.

As the art world watches, Lagator’s exhibition serves as a reminder of the resilience and depth of human experience, making it a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary art’s engagement with existential themes. Audiences are encouraged to visit and experience this unique exploration of life, history, and the absurd, all rooted in the heart of Cetinje.
