UPDATE: The Met Office has issued an urgent amber weather warning as regions across northern England and south-west Scotland brace for “very heavy and persistent rain” that could lead to serious flooding. This warning, effective from midnight on December 10, 2023, is expected to remain in place until 11.59pm tonight, with rainfall totals potentially reaching between 110mm and 130mm in affected areas.
Residents in regions including Dumfries and Galloway, the Lothian Borders, and Strathclyde are urged to take precautions, as homes and businesses are at significant risk of flooding. Notably, Cumbria is also under an amber rain alert starting at 6am today and lasting until 6pm Monday.
According to Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna, “Really, it’s a very slow-moving band of rain” that will lead to high rainfall totals. Over the next few days, areas under amber warnings could see up to 200mm of rain—equivalent to over 8 inches—creating hazardous conditions.
Residents are advised to stay away from floodwaters, as it is unsafe to drive, walk, or swim through them. If caught in fast-moving or deep floodwater, individuals should contact emergency services by calling 999 and await assistance. Severe flooding could disrupt travel and lead to power outages, isolating communities.
In addition to the amber alerts, a yellow rain warning is in effect for parts of Northern Ireland until 6am Monday, with potential flooding of homes and businesses also expected.
The Met Office recommends that residents prepare a flood kit, which should include insurance documents, a torch with spare batteries, a first-aid kit, and essential medications. Supplies to care for family members, pets, warm waterproof clothing, blankets, food, and water are also crucial.
Petagna noted that conditions will remain unsettled, with mild temperatures between 10°C and 13°C over the next few days—three to four degrees above average. However, another wave of heavy rain is anticipated to hit from the west later in the week.
As communities brace for potential flooding and disruption, it’s vital to stay informed and prepared. The Met Office continues to monitor the situation, warning that further alerts may be required as the weather develops. Keep an eye on local updates and stay safe during these challenging weather conditions.
