67th Annual Podgorica Street Race Kicks Off on December 18

UPDATE: The 67th Annual Podgorica Street Race, the oldest sporting event in Montenegro, is set to take place on December 18, 2023. This prestigious event commemorates the liberation of Podgorica and promises to attract athletes from across the region.

The race will commence at 12:00 PM at Gorica Hill, directly across from the Partisan Fighter monument. Runners will tackle a circular course measuring approximately 600 meters, with the opening ceremony kicking off the festivities.

The schedule is packed with exciting races, starting with the 600-meter event for girls from primary schools at 12:10 PM, followed by boys at 12:15 PM. High school juniors will compete next, with girls racing 1,000 meters at 12:20 PM and boys racing 1,500 meters at 12:30 PM. The senior categories, including recreational runners, students, military personnel, and veterans, will hit the track at 12:40 PM, culminating in the 5,000-meter senior race in honor of the Veliša Mugoša Memorial at 1:10 PM.

Participants will be vying for cash prizes in the senior categories, specifically for registered Montenegrin athletes within the Athletic Association of Montenegro (ASCG). Additionally, all participants will receive commemorative medals for their involvement. Notably, trophies will be awarded for the first place in three veteran categories: ages 40-50, 50-60, and over 60.

Organizers have emphasized that each competitor may participate in only one category. Registration and distribution of race numbers will take place on-site from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM on the day of the event.

This year, the event has introduced school competition elements, where the top 20 finishers will lead to awards for the most successful primary and secondary schools. Trophies and certificates will also be presented to the top-performing teachers.

With the excitement building for this long-standing tradition, the Podgorica Street Race is not just about competition; it’s a celebration of community, resilience, and athletic excellence.
