14-Year-Old Arrested After Fireworks Attack on Emergency Workers

UPDATE: A 14-year-old boy has been arrested following a disturbing incident where fireworks were directed at emergency workers responding to a fire at a high-rise building in Knowsley this evening. The alarming events unfolded at Knowsley Heights on Primrose Drive shortly before 7 PM on November 5.

Emergency services, including five fire engines and an aerial appliance from the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS), were deployed to tackle a blaze on a third-floor balcony. Upon arrival, firefighters quickly extinguished the flames but faced a shocking attack as fireworks were launched towards them.

During this dangerous situation, a female police officer sustained a minor leg injury, while another teenager was injured by a firework and received treatment from the North West Ambulance Service. Authorities confirmed that the boy was detained at approximately 7:20 PM and is being held on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody as investigations continue.

Chief Inspector Kevin Chatterton condemned the attack, stating, “We will not tolerate this type of disgraceful behaviour, particularly when it involves emergency services staff being targeted in such a way.” He emphasized the sheer luck that prevented serious injuries during the chaos.

Local leaders are also expressing outrage over the incident. Cllr Graham Morgan, Leader of Knowsley Council, voiced his shock, saying, “I am shocked and saddened that our hardworking firefighters have been targeted maliciously whilst attending a call-out.” He praised the emergency teams for their swift action and assured that those responsible would face consequences.

In an official statement, an MFRS spokesperson highlighted the urgency of respecting emergency service workers, stating, “Fire crews are out protecting our communities and do not deserve to be attacked.” They also confirmed that all fire engines are equipped with CCTV, which will be shared with Merseyside Police to aid in the investigation.

As the situation develops, officials are urging the community to remain vigilant and supportive of emergency services. The focus now shifts to ensuring the safety of both residents and emergency workers while addressing the reckless actions of those involved in this incident.
