Drivers Warned: Wearing Gloves Could Lead to £1,000 Fine

Motorists in the UK face potential fines of up to £1,000 for wearing winter gloves while driving, according to guidance from the Highway Code. Clare Freemantle, Sales and Marketing Director at Harwoods Group, highlighted the risks associated with wearing gloves that may impede a driver’s grip on the steering wheel this December. While keeping warm is essential during the colder months, experts caution that thick gloves could compromise control of the vehicle.

The Highway Code explicitly states that drivers must not allow clothing to interfere with safe operation of the vehicle controls. This regulation means that those donning winter attire, including gloves, are at risk of unexpected penalties. Freemantle noted, “As the temperatures get cooler, drivers are unintentionally opening themselves up to breaking the law. Rule 97 of the Highway Code mandates that drivers must wear “footwear and clothing which does not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner.”

Driving conditions can become particularly dangerous with lower temperatures and snowy weather. Freemantle explained that while gloves keep hands warm, they can significantly loosen a driver’s grip, increasing the risk of accidents. Motorists could be fined £1,000 if found to lack proper control of their vehicle. The situation escalates for those operating a Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) or goods vehicles, where fines can reach £2,500.

The RAC has advised that drivers should always carry bulky winter clothing in their vehicles as a precautionary measure against emergencies. Vehicle breakdowns are common during winter months, often requiring drivers to wait in the cold without heating. Therefore, it is prudent to keep warm layers such as coats, jumpers, hats, and gloves in the car.

Lucy Sherliker, head of Customer at Zuto Car Finance, echoed the importance of safety while driving in winter attire. She remarked, “We’ll all be stepping out in our winter coats, scarves, and beanies in the next few months. However, it’s important that we remove these pieces of clothing when driving.” Sherliker emphasized that wearing bulky clothing or gloves that obstruct vision or hinder vehicle operation can lead to fines of up to £1,000 and three penalty points on a driving license.

As winter approaches, motorists need to remain vigilant about regulations and the potential hazards of driving attire. Awareness of the Highway Code’s stipulations can help prevent unnecessary fines and ensure safety on the roads.
