Thousands of students and citizens gathered in Novi Sad on the evening of October 31, 2025, to welcome students from Novi Pazar who completed a remarkable journey. The students walked over 400 kilometers across Serbia, arriving in the city after 16 days of trekking. This event marked a poignant commemoration of the first anniversary of the tragic collapse of a canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad, which resulted in the loss of 16 lives.
As the students approached the city, the streets were filled with cheering crowds, waving flags and holding torches. The atmosphere was electrifying, with chants of “Pumpaj!” echoing through the air. The arrival of the students was not only a celebration of their perseverance but also a moment of reflection on the lives lost in the tragic incident last year.
Celebration and Solidarity
The spectacle included a vibrant display of fireworks, creating a breathtaking backdrop for the joyous reunion. Citizens of Novi Sad applauded the endurance of the students, who received heartfelt recognition from their peers. A special certificate was presented, stating, “For every step you took in the fight for freedom. Steps of remembrance. Without division, love is resistance.”
In addition to the students from Novi Pazar, participants included cyclists from Bačka Palanka, Belgrade, Niš, and Užice, all contributing to the spirit of unity and remembrance. The event took a personal turn when Daris Šuković proposed to his girlfriend, Džejla Ahmetović, during the celebration on the Freedom Bridge, adding a moment of joy to the evening.
Calls for Commemoration in Belgrade
Students in Belgrade also joined the observance, urging those unable to attend the festivities in Novi Sad to gather at key intersections in the capital. They planned to block traffic at 11:52 AM the following day, marking the exact time of the canopy collapse one year earlier. This initiative was met with support from local citizens, amplifying the message of solidarity and remembrance.
As the night unfolded, the spirit of community filled the air in Novi Sad. The gathering not only celebrated the remarkable journey of the students but also served as a powerful reminder of the resilience of those affected by tragedy.
