Oscar Piastri is setting his sights on a championship title for the 2026 Formula 1 season, reflecting on a year of significant growth despite not clinching the championship in 2025. The McLaren driver, who led the Drivers’ Championship for much of the previous season, experienced a challenging second half that ultimately prevented him from securing the title.
Piastri’s performance dipped on various lower-grip circuits, coinciding with a strong resurgence from his teammate, Lando Norris, and rival Max Verstappen. By the end of the season, Norris emerged as the World Champion, while Piastri finished in third place. As he prepares for the upcoming season, Piastri has noted that he has gained valuable insights from his experiences on the track.
Support from Melbourne Boosts Piastri’s Confidence
Returning home to Melbourne during the off-season, Piastri remarked on the heightened support he received from fans in his hometown. He stated that the atmosphere was “up another level” compared to previous visits, particularly during the recent Christmas holidays. Speaking to 7News, he expressed enthusiasm about racing at the season-opener in Melbourne’s Albert Park, describing the support as “fantastic.”
“It’s nice to be going into the new season starting from home,” Piastri said. “The level of support in Melbourne has always been fantastic. But the last time I went home over Christmas, not long ago, the support was up another level.” He also highlighted how more people recognized him and offered congratulations, which he found encouraging.
Reflecting on the ups and downs of the 2025 season, Piastri acknowledged the challenges he faced, particularly during a six-race streak without a podium finish. Despite these difficulties, he emphasized the positive aspects of the season, stating, “I think compared to the first couple of years of my F1 career, there were significantly more ups.”
Learning and Adapting for 2026
As Piastri prepares for the new season, he is focused on identifying the tools necessary for success. The transition to the 2026 season comes with new chassis and engine regulations that have altered the competitive landscape. Energy management will be critical, as drivers must adapt to increased electrical power from the engines.
“Still figuring out, I think,” Piastri commented, emphasizing the importance of testing in discovering the optimal driving style and car dynamics. He noted that the upcoming season requires more experimentation than in previous years, as drivers adjust to their vehicles’ preferences.
Piastri views the lessons learned from 2025 as instrumental in his growth. “You always learn more in the tougher moments,” he stated, adding that he has gained insights that will aid his performance in 2026. He is optimistic about his potential to win races and is determined to maximize his capabilities on the track.
The anticipation for the 2026 Formula 1 season is palpable, particularly with the opening race in Melbourne, a place that holds sentimental value for Piastri. As he gears up for another competitive year, the support from his home crowd may provide the boost he needs to chase the championship title.
