Andree Jeglertz, the manager of Manchester City, expressed his surprise at the team’s remarkable success in the Women’s Super League (WSL) this season. As City approaches their match against Arsenal on March 17, 2024, they hold an impressive 11-point lead over their closest rival and a 12-point margin above Chelsea, the reigning champions. This commanding position has raised eyebrows, particularly as City looks poised to secure the title after a strong performance in Jeglertz’s first season.
City’s Winning Formula
With a total of 41 goals scored this season, City has outperformed both Manchester United and Chelsea, showcasing their attacking prowess. Jeglertz attributed this dominance to a unique blend of team cohesion and a relentless drive to win. “With the quality we have in each player and if they can work together as a group, the results can be fantastic,” he stated. Although he did not anticipate being in such a strong position so early in his tenure, Jeglertz emphasized the importance of a winning mentality.
“It’s crucial to have togetherness, but it also has to be with a winning mentality,” he added. This commitment to victory has resulted in a series of impressive performances, allowing City to build a significant lead in the standings.
Challengers Eyeing the Title
While City enjoys their lead, other teams are still in contention. Arsenal’s manager, Renee Slegers, acknowledged that her team has played one match fewer than the top three teams. “What it is about for us at this moment in time is this game and what we can do in this game,” Slegers remarked, highlighting the importance of focusing on immediate objectives. She added, “All we know is that this game, we want to get the three points and the league is really tight this year again.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea, who are currently in third place, aim to recover from consecutive defeats. Their manager, Sonia Bompastor, recently signed a contract extension through 2030 and is determined to steer her team back on track. “The target in the league is different now but it’s still achievable in terms of points,” Bompastor noted. She emphasized the significance of the upcoming match against Tottenham, stating, “Sunday’s game is crucial. We’re not used to losing two games in a row and there’s a lot of noise around Chelsea because of our past success.”
Tottenham’s head coach, Martin Ho, remains cautious about underestimating Chelsea. “If anyone thinks that losing two games turns [Chelsea] into a bad team, then you’re very, very, very mistaken,” he asserted. Ho recognizes the potential threats Chelsea poses despite their recent struggles.
As the league progresses, Manchester City continues to set the pace, while Arsenal and Chelsea strive to narrow the gap. United will face Leicester on the same day as the anticipated City-Arsenal clash, further intensifying the competition within the league.
With the WSL season unfolding, the excitement builds as teams vie for the championship, and all eyes will be on the crucial matches that could shape the final standings.
