Maja Vučelić Criticizes DNP’s Demands, Urges Unity in Montenegro

Maja Vučelić, a representative from the CIVIS party, has voiced strong opposition to recent demands made by the Democratic Front (DNP) that call for constitutional amendments regarding the Serbian language and support for dual citizenship legislation. The DNP’s proposals also include normalizing the three-color flag as the national flag and changing the location of the collector. Vučelić emphasized that these demands undermine the previously agreed-upon government platform, known as “Barometar 26,” which was adopted unanimously, including support from the DNP.

Barometar 26 clearly commits all signatories to focus on unity and European Union (EU) integration, steering clear of divisive identity issues, according to Vučelić. She pointed out that today’s demands from the DNP, along with their acknowledgment that these requests conflict with their own platform, threaten to destabilize the political landscape in Montenegro at a critical time.

The year 2026 is pivotal for Montenegro’s European future, and Vučelić warned that the DNP’s actions could instigate a political crisis right at the start. As the EU shows increased readiness for expansion, she stressed that Montenegro cannot afford to lose focus on its integration efforts.

“European integration, the rule of law, and stability must remain above party ultimatums and political performances that create divisions and blockages,” Vučelić stated. She argued that unity is essential among those who are genuinely committed to the vital state objectives, and the government should not become a platform for personal frustrations.

Vučelić’s remarks highlight the urgency of maintaining a collaborative political environment as Montenegro navigates its path toward EU membership. “Montenegro is greater than any individual political game,” she concluded, reinforcing the need for a collective effort to address the nation’s priorities.

The upcoming months will be critical as Montenegro seeks to balance internal political dynamics while progressing towards its European aspirations. With the DNP’s recent stance, the challenge remains to uphold the commitments made under Barometar 26 while fostering a stable and unified approach to governance.
