The traditional winter carnival festivities in Kotor came to an exciting conclusion on January 28, 2024, marked by a grand parade and the symbolic burning of the carnival figure, Miron Tribulus, known as Pirun. This annual event reaffirmed Kotor’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage, showcasing the community’s creativity, satire, and spirit.
The parade featured 22 carnival groups, led by queen Teo Grgurović, who delighted audiences with imaginative costumes and performances. Participants hailed from Kotor, Budva, and Herceg Novi, further enriching the celebration. The event also welcomed guest performers from Bela Crkva and Leskovac, enhancing the carnival’s spirit of regional collaboration.
Participating groups included local orchestras, majorettes, and students from various schools. The youngest participants, especially from kindergartens, brought joy and vibrancy to the procession, embodying the carnival’s lively essence.
The carnival jury, chaired by Vlasta Mandić, alongside members Brano Maslovar and Dragana Mršulja, awarded special prizes to outstanding participants. The award for the most joyful carnival group went to Osnovna škola “Savo Ilić” for their costume titled “Kockalend,” while the most creative mask award was presented to the Parents’ Council of Osnovna škola “Njegoš” for their entry “Svi na banj.”
In a competitive atmosphere, the third place was claimed by the Leskovac Carnival with their mask “Moonlight Shadow.” The second prize went to JPU “Radost” for their portrayal of “Bolesnik na tri sprata,” while the first prize was awarded to OJU “Muzeji” for their innovative mask, “Baština nije scenografija.”
The closing evening took place at the bustling Trg od oružja, where the popular band Grupa and musician Bruno Rački provided an energetic finale to the festivities.
Organized by the Public Institution Cultural Centre “Nikola Đurković” in Kotor, the carnival enjoyed support from the Kotor Tourist Organization and local government. Major sponsorship came from Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort, among other local businesses, highlighting the community’s solidarity in preserving this cherished tradition.
The Kotor Carnival not only represents a significant cultural event but also serves as a reminder of the importance of community and collaboration in maintaining local traditions.
