The Armagh community is in mourning following the sudden passing of former All-Ireland winning player Laura McGibbon (née Brown) on December 30, 2025. Known for her remarkable talent on the field, McGibbon was a significant figure in both Armagh ladies’ football history and her local club, Clann Éireann.
McGibbon, originally from Lurgan, achieved notable success during her playing career. She was named Player of the Match in both the Ulster final and the All-Ireland final in 2012, a year in which she also received an All-Star nomination. Off the field, she was a devoted wife to Martin McGibbon and the loving mother of two young daughters, Eirinn and Maeva.
In a heartfelt statement, Armagh LGFA expressed their deep sorrow at her passing. They described McGibbon as “a true legend of the game,” highlighting her fierce presence as a full-back and her warm-hearted nature away from the pitch. “Laura’s legacy will live on through the memories she created,” the organization added, extending condolences to her family and friends.
McGibbon was the daughter of the late Harry and Bernie Brown and sister to Leisa, David, and Philip. Her funeral mass is scheduled for January 2, 2026, at 1 PM in St Peter’s Church.
The sentiments of loss have been echoed across social media, where tributes have poured in from those who knew her. One tribute noted, “You will never know your worth to people who loved you,” praising her ability to uplift those around her. Another tribute described her as “a beautiful girl inside and out,” reflecting the impact she had on many lives beyond sports.
Her club, Clann Éireann GAC, released a statement expressing their condolences to both the McGibbon and Brown families, acknowledging her contributions as a player, coach, and staff member. “Our sincere condolences to their entire family circle at this very sad time,” they stated.
The Carrickdale Hotel, long-time sponsors of Armagh LGFA, also shared their sorrow, calling McGibbon an “exceptional talent” who proudly represented her county. They offered heartfelt condolences to her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The Clan na Gael club joined others in expressing their sympathies, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with you all as you mourn the loss of a much loved and respected member of the wider GAA community.”
As the Armagh community comes together to remember McGibbon, her legacy as a remarkable athlete, dedicated mother, and cherished friend will undoubtedly endure in the hearts of many.
