Ground Inspections Begin for New £42.5 Million Brae High School

Ground inspections have officially commenced for the proposed new Brae High School in Shetland. Contractors began their work earlier this week, marking a significant step towards the development of the new campus. In January 2024, the Shetland Islands Council (SIC) approved an outline business case for the project, which is estimated to cost approximately £42.5 million. This funding is contingent upon the approval of a full business case, which has yet to be presented to elected members.

The Scottish Government has committed to providing half of the funding, distributed over a 25-year period. The new school is planned to be constructed on the site of the existing grass pitch, with plans to demolish the old building currently in use.

Ground Investigations Underway

A spokesperson for the SIC explained that the ground investigations are essential for understanding the conditions of the site. This information will help determine the appropriate foundations for the proposed new school. To minimize disturbances during this phase, the school announced on social media that all movement around the site will be limited. This restriction applies primarily during class hours, ensuring that there is no disruption during drop-off or pick-up times.

Only contractors are permitted on the pitch during this period. When relocating equipment around the site, the school emphasized that careful health and safety precautions will be observed, including the use of a banksman to guide movements.

Future Timeline and Construction Plans

The project is progressing on a timeline that estimates a potential opening date for the new Brae school in August 2028. If the necessary approvals are secured, construction could begin in the second period of 2026.

As part of the ongoing preparations, rotary rig holes near the school building will be drilled over the weekend. Before any digging occurs near the secondary department of the school, contractors will check to ensure that no existing structures are disturbed.

The development of the new Brae High School represents a significant investment in the educational infrastructure of Shetland, aiming to provide enhanced facilities for future generations.
