Consett Rotary Establishes Inaugural Prostate Cancer Support Group

Consett Rotary has announced the launch of the town’s first support group specifically for individuals affected by prostate cancer. The group is set to commence its activities in January 2024, addressing a notable gap in services for those living in Consett and its surrounding areas.

The initiative will be fully funded by the Rotary and managed by a team of dedicated volunteers. The inaugural meeting is scheduled for January 12, 2024, at 7:00 PM at Consett Heart on John Street. This gathering aims to provide a supportive environment where prostate cancer patients can share their experiences and connect with peers facing similar challenges.

In the UK, one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, highlighting the importance of community support and awareness. Consett Rotary recognizes the need for outreach and education, particularly in encouraging men to undergo screening. The organization has produced informational leaflets outlining the warning signs of prostate cancer to raise awareness and prompt individuals to consult their general practitioners for a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test if they exhibit any symptoms.

The support group will meet monthly following its launch, creating a continuous space for discussion, comfort, and shared understanding among those affected by this disease. Consett Rotary invites anyone impacted by prostate cancer to attend the meetings and take advantage of the resources and support available.

This initiative marks a significant step in addressing the health needs of the Consett community, fostering a supportive network for individuals navigating the complexities of prostate cancer.
