Demonstrators in Tirana threw Molotov cocktails at the government building housing the office of Prime Minister Edi Rama, demanding the resignation of his administration. The unrest follows serious allegations of corruption against Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Baluku, after prosecutors filed charges accusing her of misusing public funds to benefit specific companies in large infrastructure projects.
Political tensions have escalated in Albania over recent weeks as accusations against Baluku have surfaced. She has been accused of favoring private firms with state resources in projects worth hundreds of millions of euros, including roads, bridges, and tunnels. In response to these allegations, Baluku characterized the charges as “slander, insinuations, half-truths, and lies,” asserting her commitment to fully cooperate with the judicial process.
The Special Prosecution Office, tasked with combating corruption and organized crime, has requested the Albanian parliament to lift Baluku’s immunity to facilitate her arrest. It remains uncertain when the parliamentary vote will take place, as Rama’s ruling party holds a majority.
During the protests on December 22, 2025, thousands of citizens rallied in the capital, echoing the opposition’s calls for accountability and transparency within the government. Protesters expressed their frustration, with one demonstrator, Arben Sulo, stating, “We have had enough, as it involves tens and hundreds of millions of euros stolen, and she does not resign. This is disgraceful.”
Despite the violent scenes, police equipped for riot control did not disperse the protesters as they continued to voice their grievances. The unrest highlights growing public dissatisfaction with government officials, particularly concerning allegations of corruption and misuse of public funds.
As the situation develops, the government faces increasing pressure to address the concerns of its citizens and restore confidence in its integrity. The outcome of the parliamentary decision regarding Baluku’s immunity will be closely watched, as it could significantly impact the political landscape in Albania moving forward.
