Prince William Poised to Modernize Monarchy, Says David Dimbleby

A prominent broadcaster has claimed that Prince William is set to bring significant changes to the monarchy when he eventually ascends the throne. In a recent interview, veteran journalist David Dimbleby, 87, shared his views on royal traditions that he believes are outdated, expressing his belief that Prince William “hates” certain customs associated with the royal family. This commentary comes ahead of Dimbleby’s three-part documentary titled What’s the Monarchy For?, set to air on the BBC.

Dimbleby, who has reported on numerous royal events, including the funerals of Princess Diana in 1997 and Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, emphasized the need for the monarchy to adapt to contemporary values. He remarked, “I don’t understand why people, particularly with the late Queen, were so flummoxed when they met her,” referring to the awkwardness displayed by individuals during royal encounters. He further criticized the traditional practices of bowing and curtseying, stating, “The bowing and scraping element is quite out of date and ridiculous.”

In his remarks to The Telegraph, Dimbleby expressed his support for a monarchy that aligns with modern sensibilities, stating, “I’m pro-monarchy if it suits the spirit of the times.” He dismissed the notion that the monarchy is beneficial solely for attracting tourists, describing it as “one of the worst arguments.” Dimbleby acknowledged a growing sentiment, particularly among younger individuals, who are increasingly questioning the relevance of the monarchy. He stated, “There is a ‘growing tide’ of people who are no longer in favour of a monarchy.”

While he does not foresee a shift to a republic in the near future, Dimbleby emphasized the potential for a reformed monarchy under Prince William’s leadership. He described a “carefully constructed form of monarchy” as a viable and acceptable alternative if it meets public expectations. Additionally, he criticized the royal family’s “antiquated” privileges, such as their legal exemption from paying taxes.

In a recent conversation with actor Eugene Levy, host of Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveler, Prince William hinted at his ambition to modernize the monarchy. He stated, “I think it’s safe to say that change is on my agenda. Change for good.” However, he refrained from detailing the specific reforms he envisions.

The upcoming BBC series arrives at a time of fluctuating public support for the Royal Family, following negative media coverage surrounding Prince Andrew. The first episode of What’s the Monarchy For? is scheduled to air on Tuesday at 21:00 on BBC One, promising to explore the monarchy’s role and relevance in today’s society. As the discussion surrounding royal customs and future changes continues, many await to see how Prince William will shape the monarchy in his eventual reign.
