The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Taminu Kabiru Turaki, reaffirmed the party’s unity and readiness for upcoming elections during a recent meeting with 29 state chairmen. Turaki, leading the mainstream faction of the PDP, emphasized his agenda to strengthen the party’s grassroots presence across Nigeria. The meeting, held to bolster support for his leadership, concluded with a vote of confidence from the chairmen and a commitment to reclaim the governorship of Ekiti State.
Turaki’s remarks came as the political landscape intensifies ahead of significant elections. He criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for its leadership, stating, “Today, Nigerians are living witnesses that the achievements and progress made during the 16 PDP’s glorious years have either been destroyed, shattered, or reversed.” This sentiment was echoed as he described the current mission of the PDP as reclaiming Nigeria from what he termed “inept leadership.”
During the meeting, Turaki highlighted the attendance of 29 state chairmen, noting that their presence signifies overwhelming support for the party’s direction. “If all the state chairmen are here with us, then who is it that is not with us?” he posed, underscoring the party’s unity as it prepares for the electoral challenges ahead.
In a related development, the PDP presented a certificate of return to its governorship candidate for Ekiti State, Dr. Oluyede Oluwole. The certificate was presented by former Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, confirming Oluwole’s nomination after winning with 297 votes in a recent election monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Turaki stressed that this recognition by INEC validates the current National Working Committee members and challenged the opposing factions to present their own candidates officially recognized by the commission.
APC Aspirants Urged to Unite for Osun Governorship Election
In a parallel political arena, President Bola Tinubu convened a meeting with eight aspirants from the APC ahead of the party’s primary election scheduled for December 13, 2025. Addressing the aspirants, Tinubu called for unity and collaboration, emphasizing the importance of winning the upcoming governorship election in Osun State.
The president expressed confidence in the aspirants’ ability to secure victory for the party, stating, “You all have a duty and obligation to the party by ensuring the candidate of our party wins the next election in Osun State.” His remarks aimed to unite the group following past electoral challenges faced by the party.
Notably absent from the meeting was former Deputy Governor Iyiola Omisore, who had previously dismissed his disqualification from the primary election as a “joke.” Tinubu’s message resonated with other party leaders present, including APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda and Governor Hope Uzodimma.
After lengthy discussions, the aspirants collectively signed a statement pledging their commitment to party unity and support for the consensus candidate to emerge from the primary election. The agreement outlined their mutual respect for the party’s decision-making process and a shared commitment to ensuring the APC’s success in the upcoming polls.
Both the PDP and APC are positioning themselves strategically as they approach critical elections, highlighting the competitive nature of Nigeria’s political landscape. As the campaigns heat up, the focus remains on the grassroots engagement and party unity essential for electoral success.
