Investigation Promise: John Mahama, the NDC Flagbearer, has pledged to investigate and hold accountable those responsible for the alleged misuse of funds allocated to the Keta Port project if he is elected in the 2024 election.
Concerns Over Fund Allocation: Mahama raised concerns about the allocation of $8 million from the Meridian Port Services (MPS) deal dividends for constructing an administration block at the Keta Port, which he describes as a “non-existent port.”
Comparison to Boankra Port: Mahama compared the Keta Port project to the Boankra inland port in the Ashanti Region, warning against repeating the same mistakes that led to Boankra becoming a “white elephant,” despite significant financial investments.
John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer for the 2024 election, has pledged to hold accountable those responsible for misusing funds allocated to the Keta Port project. Speaking during his tour in the Keta Constituency of the Volta Region, Mahama highlighted concerns about the government’s allocation of $8 million, sourced from dividends of the Meridian Port Services (MPS) deal, to construct an administration block for what he describes as a “non-existent port.”
Mahama pointed out that the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GAPOHA), a stakeholder in the MPS deal, has received $280 million in dividends since the new port was established. He emphasized the necessity of conducting a thorough research and needs assessment before building a new port between the existing major ports of Tema Harbour and the Port of Lomé.
Drawing a parallel to the Boankra inland port project in the Ashanti Region, which he labeled a “white elephant,” Mahama cautioned against repeating past mistakes. He noted that while $70 million was initially allocated to the Boankra port, $8 million has similarly been set aside for the administrative block of the Keta port.
Mahama firmly stated that if elected, his administration would audit the Keta Port project and hold accountable anyone found to have misappropriated funds, ensuring that proper investigations are conducted.
