The photograph features the family’s youngest son, with his red hair matching that of their pet pig, Ronald, in a shot filled with playful energy. This unique approach to photography has gained traction, especially since the onset of the pandemic.
On the morning of the shoot, March 15, 2024, Sara Weir and her five children were enjoying their typical morning routine at home when Radwanski aimed to capture the essence of their family life. With another child on the way, Weir sought Radwanski’s expertise to document this special time.
Innovative Remote Photography Techniques
Radwanski, who was situated in Oregon during the shoot, employed a specialized app that remotely controlled Weir’s iPhone 13. This innovative technique allows photographers to guide the shoot while being miles away. “I used a special app that took over Sara’s phone camera,” Radwanski explained. “The day before the shoot, she showed me around her home to identify optimal lighting and compositions that would tell their story.”
The remote setup included a tall tripod to stabilize the phone, enabling Radwanski to direct the placement of the device for the best angles. This arrangement proved effective for accommodating all five children as they moved in and out of the frame. Radwanski noted that she has photographed over 500 people across 14 countries using this method, showcasing its versatility and appeal.
A Moment of Unplanned Joy
The candid nature of the photograph encapsulates a joyful family dynamic. Radwanski described the excitement of capturing the moment when Weir’s eldest son wandered into the frame with Ronald, the pot-bellied pig. The pig was humorously named after a character from the popular Harry Potter series, reflecting the family’s affinity for redheads. “They chose the name Ronald because they are a family of redheads,” Radwanski added.
The resulting image, with the boy’s content face illuminated by morning light, is a testament to the serendipity of photography. “It was one of those perfect shots you can never plan for,” Radwanski remarked, emphasizing that the spontaneity of the moment contributed to its charm.
