Marathon Runner Captures Stunning Scene in Havana at Dawn

Demétrio Jereissati, a marathon runner and amateur photographer from Fortaleza, Brazil, has spent nearly two decades documenting his surroundings through running and photography. Each morning, Jereissati ventures out early to explore the streets, capturing the essence of his city and beyond. “Every day reveals new angles and unexpected scenes,” he explains. “For me, these early hours are an exercise in truly seeing.”

In 2019, during a visit to Havana, Cuba, Jereissati embarked on one of his early morning runs that would lead to a memorable photograph. Setting out alone at 6 a.m., he made his way toward the waterfront Malecón promenade. The rising sun illuminated the city, revealing a stunning architectural backdrop that captured his attention.

As Jereissati approached the promenade, he was captivated by the “distinctive architectural lines and windows” of a building in view, noting its aged yet majestic condition. The scene around him was bustling, with classic cars cruising the streets and locals starting their day.

“I took several shots on my phone, trying to capture the young man in red shorts passing by,” Jereissati recalls. Just as he focused on the moment, a speeding car of the same vibrant color unexpectedly entered the frame. This fortuitous event transformed his photograph into what he describes as “the perfect, eclectic scene.”

Jereissati emphasizes that his photography aims to weave together his personal vision of a place. “When I shoot, I try to capture not just an image but an experience,” he states. The photograph of Havana, now etched in his memory, serves as a testament to the beauty and vibrancy of the city.

Following his time in Havana, Jereissati traveled to the rural town of Viñales, known for its tobacco production. Despite the change in scenery, the image he captured in Havana remains a highlight of his photographic journey. The interplay of light, architecture, and human activity in his photograph reflects the rich cultural tapestry of Cuba, emphasizing Jereissati’s belief in the power of observation.

Through his lens, Demétrio Jereissati not only showcases his passion for photography but also invites others to appreciate the world around them. Each image tells a story, capturing moments that might otherwise go unnoticed and preserving them for future reflection.
