A new documentary titled “Cetinje – Memory of a Nation,” directed by Mirjana Miladinović, premiered today at the Cultural Centre in Cetinje as part of the “Discover Montenegro” initiative. This project aims to redefine the cultural and tourist presentation of Montenegro, focusing on cities deeply rooted in the nation’s history.
Miladinović, drawing from her extensive background as an information editor, passionately conveyed her mission to preserve Montenegro’s identity and promote its historically significant cities. She emphasized that certain cities are remembered not just for their streets and buildings, but for the enduring spirit that transcends generations. “Cetinje is such a place,” she remarked. It has served as a hub for Montenegrin rulers, poets, and artists alike, embodying both political decisions and the cultural expression that shapes national thought.
The documentary highlights that Cetinje represents more than mere history; it embodies continuity. “Every stone, every record, every glance toward the space from which our story began testifies to the responsibility we hold for what we have inherited,” Miladinović stated at the premiere. She explained that the film reflects on the importance of recognizing Cetinje as a spiritual center in addition to its political significance.
According to the director, the film serves as a reminder that Cetinje is not just a historical site; it is a living entity. “This film is vital because it teaches us not only about the past but also reminds us of who we are,” Miladinović added. The aim is to present Cetinje to the world as a vibrant blend of nature, culture, and vision, rather than just a historical museum.
The “Discover Montenegro” project was initiated to shift public focus away from the coastal tourism that has dominated for decades, highlighting instead the overlooked areas of Montenegro on global maps. Savo Borozan, representing the municipality, noted that their efforts include a series of broadcasts exploring various Montenegrin towns. Additionally, a comprehensive web platform is being developed to serve as a central information hub for all cities in Montenegro.
Borozan emphasized that all materials would be available in seven languages, significantly improving access to information for international tourists. “Cetinje is nestled between mountains and the sea, capturing the best of both worlds. Our goal is to present ourselves in an accessible and modern way,” he stated.
Nikola Jablan, director of the Cetinje Tourist Organization, highlighted that outdoor tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments in Europe. He pointed out that Cetinje possesses a unique authenticity that must be further developed as part of its identity. “Our goal is satisfied guests—those who come for nature, stay longer, respect the destination, and return,” Jablan remarked, underscoring that the film is not merely a historical narrative but a robust promotion of contemporary tourism potential in the capital.
The completion of “Cetinje – Memory of a Nation” marks a significant milestone for the “Discover Montenegro” initiative. In just ten concise minutes, the film integrates two national parks, rich cultural heritage, and modern tourism opportunities into a cohesive narrative. This sends a clear message: Montenegro offers a rare package of services, with Cetinje remaining its undeniable spiritual and historical cornerstone.
As the project continues through the development of the web platform and multilingual support, it aims to ensure that this message reaches every corner of the globe. The initiative invites travelers to discover the true face of Montenegro, showcasing its unique cultural landscape.
