David Bowie’s childhood home in Bromley, south-east London, is set to be opened to the public, offering fans a glimpse into the early life of the iconic musician. The modest property, located on Plaistow Grove, is where Bowie lived from the age of eight until he was 20. It is notable for being the birthplace of his first chart hit, “Space Oddity”, which debuted in 1969 alongside the historic Moon landings.
The Heritage Of London Trust has acquired the house and plans to restore the interior to reflect its 1960s appearance, the era during which Bowie penned some of his most significant works. The home will not only serve as a museum but also as a venue for creative workshops aimed at nurturing new talent.
Preserving Bowie’s Legacy
Geoffrey Marsh, who previously curated the David Bowie exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2015, will play a key role in the restoration process. According to Marsh, a previously unseen archive will aid in accurately recreating the space as it was during Bowie’s formative years. He remarked on the significance of the house, stating, “It was in this small house, particularly in his tiny bedroom, that Bowie evolved from an ordinary suburban schoolboy to the beginnings of an extraordinary international stardom.”
Bowie’s career included five UK number one singles and 11 UK number one albums, with influence spanning genres like glam rock, soul, electronic music, and disco. His rise to fame began with “Space Oddity,” a song that tells the story of the doomed astronaut Major Tom, capturing the imagination of a generation.
A Tribute to a Music Icon
The opening of the house comes nearly a decade after Bowie’s passing on January 10, 2016. A blue plaque already adorns the building, marking it as a site of historical importance tied to the legendary artist. This initiative not only honors Bowie’s memory but also provides an educational platform for future generations interested in music and culture.
