The Supreme Court of Montenegro has decided to extend the detention of Edin Čaluk for an additional two months, following a request from the Higher State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica. This extension means that Čaluk will remain in custody until February 5, 2026, as authorities continue to investigate his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
The court’s ruling comes amid serious allegations against Čaluk, who is suspected of committing the crime of unauthorized production, possession, and distribution of narcotic drugs. According to the investigation order, he is accused of smuggling 131 kilograms of marijuana into Montenegro from Albania on September 5, 2023. The drugs were reportedly concealed in a hidden compartment of a Renault Iveco truck, distributed across 114 plastic packages.
During a routine customs check at the terminal in Podgorica, authorities discovered the narcotics through scanning and physical inspection of the vehicle. The court emphasized that the detention extension was necessary due to the significant risk of flight posed by Čaluk, who holds citizenship in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
His frequent international travel and established connections abroad raise concerns that he might attempt to evade justice. The Supreme Court took these factors into consideration when deciding on the detention extension. Initially, Čaluk was detained by a ruling from an investigative judge on September 7, 2023, with the detention later extended by the Criminal Council of the same court on October 3, 2023.
The ruling underscores the ongoing efforts of Montenegrin authorities to combat drug trafficking and organized crime within the region. As the case progresses, further developments are anticipated, particularly regarding the investigation into the broader network involved in this drug trafficking incident.
