Patients Seek Answers as Surgeon Faces Legal Scrutiny

Concerns are mounting over the medical practices of surgeon Leslie Irwin, who has been placed on a “recall” list by Spire Healthcare, following numerous allegations from former patients. Irwin, a consultant surgeon who worked at both the Sunderland Royal Hospital and the Spire Washington Hospital, retired from the NHS in 2022 but was suspended by Spire Healthcare in 2024.

Last month, it was disclosed that Irwin is now publicly listed on Spire’s website, inviting patients for consultations to review their care. Notably, Irwin deregistered himself from the General Medical Council in 2025, which means he cannot be investigated by the regulatory body.

Legal representatives are stepping in to assist affected patients. The law firm Slater and Gordon announced it is providing free legal advice at a clinic on February 19, 2025, at the Beacon of Light in Sunderland. The firm is already acting for “dozens” of former patients of Irwin, indicating significant concern within the community.

John Lowther, a specialist clinical negligence solicitor, emphasized the gravity of the situation. He stated, “There are clearly great concerns over the fact that so many former patients of Mr Irwin have come forward. We want to support as many as possible to find the answers they need over what went so wrong in their care.” The clinic will offer opportunities for individuals to both drop in and make appointments in advance.

In response to the allegations, Irwin’s wife has publicly defended him, describing the claims as “a total, complete lie.” She expressed frustration over the regulations preventing her husband from responding publicly, stating, “No doctor can speak because of the General Medical Council rules. He does not have a right of reply.” She condemned the situation as damaging to a career spanning four decades, suggesting that social media innuendo has contributed to the concerns.

A spokesperson for Spire Healthcare stated in January, “We are currently reviewing specific procedures that were provided to a select cohort of patients of Mr Leslie Irwin.” They confirmed they are in contact with relevant patients to offer support and are conducting the review in accordance with NHS England’s National Quality Board: Recall Framework.

The South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Trust has also engaged in discussions with Spire to assess the scale of the patient recall and determine necessary steps for patient reviews. They are prioritizing communication with patients identified for follow-up.

As the situation unfolds, affected individuals are encouraged to reach out to Spire Healthcare for further assistance. Patients with inquiries about their care can contact the dedicated review team at Spire by calling 0191 720 3031 or emailing [email protected].

In light of these developments, the legal clinic hosted by Slater and Gordon may prove crucial for patients seeking clarity and support regarding their medical care under Irwin.
