Visiting restrictions at NHS Forth Valley have been lifted following a significant rise in seasonal flu cases earlier this month. The measures, which were implemented on December 3, 2023, aimed to protect patients and staff amidst a surge in hospital admissions. Normal visiting arrangements resumed across all inpatient areas on December 19, 2023.
Local wards may still have varying visiting protocols based on clinical needs, and visitors are encouraged to confirm arrangements prior to attending. The decision to ease restrictions comes after local infection control data indicated that flu-related hospital admissions might be stabilizing, suggesting a potential decline in cases.
Prof Karen Goudie, executive nurse director at NHS Forth Valley, stated, “We have seen some early positive signs which suggest flu cases, particularly in local hospitals, have reduced. This means we can ease the visiting restrictions and use of face masks.” She expressed gratitude to the public, patients, and staff for their cooperation with the temporary measures over the past weeks.
Despite the easing of restrictions, NHS Forth Valley remains vigilant. Prof Goudie emphasized the importance of continued monitoring, noting that “there is no room for complacency.” She warned that restrictions could be reinstated if flu cases rise again.
The public is reminded to exercise caution when visiting healthcare facilities. Prof Goudie urged individuals to avoid hospitals and care homes if they are feeling unwell, as even mild cold or flu symptoms can pose serious risks to vulnerable patients. She also encouraged good hand hygiene and the use of face masks for those attending healthcare appointments.
Flu vaccination efforts are ongoing, with drop-in sessions available at local vaccination centres and pharmacies throughout Forth Valley. Information regarding vaccination can be found on the NHS Forth Valley website or by contacting the local vaccination team at 0800 130 3120. Those eligible who have not yet received their vaccination are strongly encouraged to do so promptly to help protect against the flu and reduce the likelihood of severe illness.
