Elton John Opens Up About Battle with Blindness and Hope for Recovery

Elton John has shared a poignant update regarding his struggle with blindness, stemming from a severe eye infection contracted while vacationing in France last summer. The 78-year-old music icon revealed that the infection caused him to lose sight in his right eye and has left his left eye with lasting damage.

In a candid interview with Variety, John described the impact of his deteriorating vision, stating, “It’s been devastating.” He elaborated on how the past 15 months have been particularly challenging, limiting his ability to engage in activities he once enjoyed. “I haven’t been able to see anything, watch anything, read anything,” he said. John expressed hope for the future, stating, “I’ve had the most incredible life, and there is hope. I’ve just gotta be patient that someday science will help me with this one.”

The musician drew parallels between his current health challenges and his past experiences with the AIDS crisis, emphasizing the importance of resilience and optimism. “You mustn’t give up hope, you must be stoic, you must be strong and you must always try and batter the door down to try and improve things,” he noted.

In March 2023, it was disclosed that John had to simplify his signature while signing copies of his new album. Instead of his full name, he could only manage to write his initial, “E,” along with a kiss. The following month, he shared the heart-wrenching reality of not being able to watch his sons, Zachary, aged 14, and Elijah, aged 12, participate in sports. “I can’t see my sons play rugby and soccer, and it’s been a stressful time as it would previously be a highlight for me,” he said.

In December, John expressed his disappointment at not being able to see his new musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada, although he found solace in the ability to listen to the soundtrack. During an appearance on Good Morning America, he reflected on the emotional toll of his condition, stating, “It kind of floored me, and I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t watch anything.”

Despite the difficulties, John remains grateful for his supportive family. He shared, “I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of here,” referring to his left eye. He acknowledged the emotional struggle, saying, “It’s distressing. You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have.”

John’s vision loss is not the only health issue he has faced in recent years. He has also been diagnosed with type-2 diabetes and has undergone multiple surgeries, including hip and knee replacements, as well as the removal of his tonsils, appendix, and prostate. Insiders have indicated that friends and family are concerned about his workload and the impact it may have on his health, urging him to “slow down” to ensure he can enjoy more time with his children.

As John continues to navigate these challenges, his resilience and determination to remain hopeful offer an inspiring narrative for his fans and the public alike.
