Community Celebrates New 20mph Speed Limit Near Dunseverick PS

Plans to introduce a 20mph speed limit near Dunseverick Primary School have been welcomed by local councillor Kyle Cllr. This initiative aims to enhance safety for children and families navigating the busy Whitepark Road, which is a significant route for tourists traveling between Bushmills and Ballintoy.

Kyle Cllr expressed his satisfaction with the proposed changes, stating, “This is a victory for common sense and community safety.” He highlighted the efforts made in partnership with Jim Allister MP to advocate for these safety measures since early May 2024. Their consistent representations to the Department of Infrastructure and the local Police Commander were motivated by concerns over the high speeds observed on the road.

The plans include not only the implementation of the 20mph zones on sections of Feigh Road and Whitepark Road but also the installation of flashing amber lights. These lights will serve as reminders for drivers to reduce their speed during peak school hours, creating a safer environment for students and parents alike.

Kyle Cllr emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety, stating, “The safety of our children must always come first.” The councillor’s remarks reflect a broader community sentiment that reducing speed limits can significantly minimize risks associated with high-speed traffic in school zones.

With the introduction of these measures, local residents hope to transform a previously high-speed thoroughfare into a more secure area for pupils. The initiative marks a proactive approach to community safety, aiming to alleviate the fears of parents and guardians who are concerned about the traffic conditions surrounding the school.

The new speed limit is expected to be implemented in the coming weeks, as local authorities work to finalize the necessary arrangements. The community looks forward to the positive impact this will have on the safety and well-being of its youngest members.
