Charles Barkley on TNT losing NBA games
The NBA recently revealed intentions to secure a fresh TV rights deal with Amazon within their media rights discussions.
This implies that TNT will no longer have the rights to air games, a privilege they have had since 1989.
Charles Barkley, who stars on the acclaimed TV show Inside The NBA, made a comment about the NBA’s negotiations for media rights with TNT.
He clearly expressed his disappointment in how things unfolded.
Certainly, it has been evident that the NBA desired to end the relationship with us from the start.
I doubt that TNT had any opportunity. TNT offered the same amount of money, but the league recognizes that only Amazon and similar tech companies are willing to pay double for future rights.
“The NBA didn’t want to anger them,” said Barkley in his statement, which was shared by Bleacher Report.
He expressed sadness when owners and commissioners prioritize money over fans. Barkley frequently emphasizes that a major downside of Warner Bros.
Discovery (the parent company of TNT) losing its NBA rights is the immediate loss of jobs for many.
Like many supporters, he argues that it is unjust for individuals to endure the consequences of a feud between two extremely wealthy corporations.
Charles Barkley’s comment on TNT losing the rights to broadcast the NBA.
TNT announced earlier on Friday their intention to pursue legal measures against the NBA.
They called the NBA’s refusal of their proposal “unjustified,” stating that they think it is best for fans to continue having NBA coverage on TNT.
Charles Barkley expressed his desire for TNT to choose not to pursue legal action in an interview with The Athletic.
If you find yourself needing to take legal action against someone in order to maintain a relationship, do you believe that relationship is a healthy one? Barkley had also stated that he planned to step away from television after the 2024-25 season.
Since 2000, he has been on television, transitioning to TNT after ending his Hall of Fame basketball career.
Yet, he appeared to backpedal on his initial statements when his financial interests were at stake.
If Warner Bros. Discovery does not follow through on the entire agreement, Barkley, in his third year of a $210 million contract, may have the option to become a free agent.
Barkley told The Athletic that TNT Sports needs to contact him quickly and ensure his entire contract, otherwise he may consider a pay reduction and become a free agent.
“I was thinking, ‘You guys made a mistake, not me, so why should I be the one taking a salary reduction?'”
If TNT no longer has the NBA rights, Inside the NBA will no longer exist as it does now.
It would be a grim conclusion to one of the most cherished sports programs ever.
