Antiques Roadshow Guest Discovers Family Tea Set Worth £2,500

An unexpected discovery unfolded during the latest episode of Antiques Roadshow, as a guest learned that her inherited Chinese tea set could be worth between £1,500 and £2,500. The revelation left her in disbelief, prompting her to exclaim, “That’s outrageous!” The episode, which aired on 4th January 2024, showcased an array of historical treasures at Swansea’s National Waterfront Museum.

During the programme, specialist Serhat Ahmet evaluated a striking Chinese tea service presented by a woman who revealed it once belonged to her relative, Margaret. Upon unveiling the collection from a green case, Ahmet was visibly impressed by the set’s vibrant red hue and intricate sgraffito decorations.

“This is Margaret’s tea set,” the guest explained, sharing that her relative had passed away at the age of 94 the previous year. The tea set had been largely forgotten in an attic for around 80 years before it was almost donated to charity. “I thought, ‘Hang on. Can I have a look?’” she said, recalling her decision to keep it.

The backstory of the tea set added to its allure. Margaret’s father, a Merchant Navy captain, had discovered it while stationed in Shanghai. Ahmet highlighted the “wonderful” packaging from the manufacturer located on Nanking Road, as well as an old newspaper found within the case, confirming the set’s purchase in 1947. The guest verified this detail, noting that Margaret would have been around 14 years old when her father gifted it to her.

Ahmet elaborated on the craftsmanship, noting the carefully etched Ching dragons in the sgraffito patterns, indicating the high quality of teaware production during that era.

“We are looking at the very high end of teaware production in this period,” he stated. This level of craftsmanship typically commands a significant price at auction, a claim that piqued the guest’s interest. Her initial estimate for the tea set’s value was merely £100, a stark contrast to Ahmet’s valuation.

“Really?” she responded in astonishment. “You’re not serious. That’s outrageous. Goodness me, I don’t know what to say. I can’t get over it!”

The episode not only highlighted the value of family heirlooms but also the fascinating stories behind them. Antiques Roadshow continues to captivate audiences with its blend of history, art, and personal narratives, making it a beloved feature on BBC One.
