Wrexham Council Plans to Reduce Pupil Intake at Local Schools

Wrexham Council is set to hold public drop-in sessions next week to discuss proposed reductions in pupil numbers at two primary schools in Rhos. The local authority is responding to a significant surplus capacity of 22.1% in Wrexham’s primary schools, a situation attributed to declining birth rates. With pupil numbers projected to continue decreasing over the next few years, the council aims to implement a cap on future pupil intakes at Penygelli Community Primary School and Ysgol Maes y Mynydd.

Starting in September 2027, the proposed changes would limit nursery and reception intake numbers at Penygelli Community Primary School to 30 pupils, down from 45. Similarly, Ysgol Maes y Mynydd would see its intake capped at 45 pupils, reduced from 51. These measures are part of Wrexham Council’s strategy to ensure that school resources are aligned with current and projected enrolment figures.

The council encourages parents, guardians, and community members to participate in the consultation process. Drop-in sessions will be held at both schools, providing an opportunity to learn more about the proposals and share feedback.

For those interested, the sessions will take place at the following locations:

– **Penygelli Community Primary School**
– **Ysgol Maes y Mynydd**

All relevant information regarding the consultations can be found in previous articles published by Wrexham Council. Additionally, individuals who are unable to attend the sessions in person can submit their views via email to either [email protected] or [email protected].

The consultation period will remain open until February 2, 2026, allowing ample time for community input. Wrexham Council aims to gather comprehensive feedback to make informed decisions regarding the future of these primary schools and their capacity to serve the community effectively.

This initiative underscores the council’s commitment to adapting educational resources to current demographics while maintaining a focus on quality education for local children.
