Prince William Delivers Message Honoring Veterans in Schools

The Prince of Wales, Prince William, is set to deliver a significant message in schools throughout the United Kingdom today, emphasizing the importance of honoring veterans. In a pre-recorded video, he will encourage students to take a moment to “stop and reflect” on their service, especially in relation to Armistice Day, which falls on November 11 each year.

In his address, Prince William, 43, states that Remembrance Day serves as a vital opportunity to cultivate empathy, resilience, and responsibility among young people. He notes, “Coming together for Remembrance is a vital way to honor those whose service keeps us safe.” The message is part of the Royal British Legion’s Remembrance Assembly, an online learning event aimed at students aged 9 to 14, accessible via platforms like YouTube and Zoom.

In the video, Prince William highlights the ongoing relevance of remembrance, saying, “Even today, as we continue to face a number of conflicts across the world, we honor those who have gone before us, and those who are serving now.” He emphasizes the importance of honoring not just the memories of those who have served but the lessons they impart about kindness and bravery.

Engaging with Veterans’ Stories

The Remembrance Assembly will also feature direct testimonies from current military personnel, including RAF Air Commander Fred Wigglesworth and Army Lieutenant Colonel Manpreet Maycock. Additionally, students will hear firsthand accounts from Second World War veterans, enriching the learning experience with personal narratives.

Prince William reflects on his own military experiences, stating, “Through my own military experience, as well as my work in connection with units across the Royal Navy, the Army, and the Royal Air Force, I have seen firsthand the hard work, dedication, and duty the Armed Forces carry out to ensure we are protected.” His words aim to instill a sense of gratitude and respect in the younger generation.

Later today, Prince William will join other members of the royal family at Windsor Castle for a reception honoring veterans on the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The reception will include veterans from the Victory over Japan (VJ) Day celebrations, highlighting the ongoing commitment to those who have served.

Princess of Wales Commemorates at National Memorial Arboretum

Meanwhile, the Princess of Wales will attend the Armistice Day Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. She will participate in a two-minute silence at 11:00 and lay a wreath in memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

A specially commissioned poem titled “A Sonnet For Us All,” authored by Arji Manuelpillai, the National Memorial Arboretum’s Poet in Residence, will be read during the service. This poem reflects on the deep personal connections forged through military service, a theme that resonates with the Princess.

Through these events, both Prince William and the Princess of Wales aim to foster a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces and the significance of remembrance in shaping future generations. Their efforts highlight a commitment to honoring the past while encouraging a sense of duty and respect in young people today.
