Primary School Pupils Engage with Shakespeare in Dramatic Workshop

Primary school pupils at Criftins School recently participated in an engaging drama workshop led by professionals from Moreton Hall. The session focused on introducing Shakespeare’s language and dramatic techniques, enabling students to explore the themes and emotions of his work in a hands-on environment.

During the workshop, pupils collaborated to recreate the opening storm from *The Tempest*. Through movement, vocal exercises, and teamwork, they delivered an imaginative interpretation of the scene, enhancing both their creativity and self-confidence. Michael Jenkins, a professional actor and Head of Drama at Moreton Hall, expressed his admiration for the students’ talents. He stated, “Criftins School have got real talent. I was thrilled with how the pupils responded. Within just one hour, they were choreographed and working superbly together to create a tempest, telling the story of Prospero and his spirit, Ariel.”

The session, which took place on October 2, 2023, allowed every pupil to fully engage with Shakespeare’s text. Jenkins highlighted the impressive use of physicality and vocal skills exhibited by the students, noting that they effectively brought the narrative to life. He remarked, “It was brilliant.”

Promoting Creativity through Arts Outreach

This workshop forms part of Moreton Hall’s outreach programme, aimed at inspiring younger students and introducing them to high-quality drama experiences. The school has earned recognition for its exceptional drama curriculum, having been nominated for the title of *Most Outstanding Drama Department 2026*. Last year, an impressive 100% of GCSE and A Level Drama students achieved grades between A and A*.

At the heart of Moreton Hall’s drama education is the Holroyd Community Theatre, a cutting-edge performance venue featuring professional-grade lighting, sound, and staging. This facility provides students with an authentic theatrical experience, further enhancing their educational journey.

Nia Evans, Head of School at Criftins, praised the collaboration with Moreton Hall. She noted that Jenkins’s approach inspired students, especially those who are typically more reserved. “Having Moreton Hall deliver this workshop was brilliant for our pupils. Michael brought out the very best in them and left them feeling inspired. It was wonderful to see some of our quieter pupils grow in confidence. The power of the arts truly knows no bounds,” she commented.
