Coleg Cambria has launched a pioneering series of flexible higher education courses aimed at transforming the landscape of further and higher education in Wales. This initiative expands the college’s HN Flex model, which offers a modern, bitesize approach to learning that accommodates the busy schedules of contemporary students. Following the introduction of the HNC Flex in Business at Northop earlier this year, Cambria University Centre is now rolling out a comprehensive series of Higher National unit deliveries, significantly increasing choices for learners.
Developed in collaboration with Pearson, the HN Flex model enables students to take selected units at their own pace, with expert support from tutors. These qualifications maintain the same academic recognition and employer credibility as traditional Higher Nationals, but provide the flexibility that many modern learners require.
Emma Hurst, Dean of Access and Higher Education at Cambria University Centre, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “HN Flex is a trailblazing step for further and higher education in Wales,” she noted. “We know that life doesn’t pause for education, and our learners shouldn’t have to choose between personal responsibilities and professional development.” Hurst added, “HN Flex empowers people to study when and where it works for them – with high-quality teaching, recognised qualifications, and real career progression opportunities.”
New Courses Launching in 2026
Among the new qualifications set to launch in 2026 are HN Flex in Cyber Security Level 4, HN Flex in Innovation and Digital Transformation Level 4, HN Flex in Professional Practice in the Digital Economy, and HN Flex in Programming Level 4. Additionally, courses in Construction and Hospitality Management will be introduced in the upcoming year. These new offerings build on the foundational principles established by the initial HN Flex in Business course, which allowed learners to pursue bitesize, stackable units that contribute towards a full qualification.
The expansion into digital and technology disciplines reflects a growing recognition of the need for flexible education options. This approach provides opportunities for individuals to retrain, upskill, or take their first steps into higher education while balancing work and family commitments. Learners can progress at their own pace, receiving support from Cambria’s expert staff across campuses in Wrexham, Deeside, and Northop.
Funding support is available for eligible learners through regional Employer Skills programmes, making these innovative courses even more accessible. Coleg Cambria’s commitment to redefining education aligns with contemporary needs, ensuring that learners can achieve their educational and professional goals without compromising other aspects of their lives.
This initiative not only highlights the college’s dedication to enhancing educational access but also positions Wales at the forefront of flexible higher education solutions. As the demand for adaptable learning options continues to grow, Coleg Cambria stands ready to meet these challenges with its innovative HN Flex model.
