Ceredigion County Council Unveils Plans for Agricultural College

Ceredigion County Council has opened the doors to a new agricultural college located at Llettytwppa Farm in Lampeter, following a significant investment aimed at boosting the local rural economy. The council secured a loan of £1.85 million from the Welsh Government in the summer of 2023 to purchase the farm, which is situated along Llanfair Road and adjacent to the town’s university.

The initiative is designed to develop educational opportunities that align with the demands of the agricultural sector and related industries. By transforming Llettytwppa Farm into a dedicated learning facility, the council aims to offer a variety of courses in agricultural practices and sustainability. These programs will include topics such as hedge laying, safe machinery operation, agricultural mechanics, and sustainable farming techniques.

Community Engagement and Educational Focus

On December 3, the council hosted an engagement evening that brought together key stakeholders from the agricultural community, including farming unions, local businesses, and young people interested in pursuing careers in agriculture. Cllr Bryan Davies, Leader of Ceredigion County Council, emphasized the importance of collaboration with the agricultural sector to tailor educational opportunities. He stated, “This event has shown how important it is to work with the agricultural sector to shape learning opportunities that are relevant and practical. It was a great opportunity to share ideas and gather feedback on the new plans.”

The council’s vision for Llettytwppa Farm extends to providing practical experiences for both young people and lifelong learners, ensuring that the educational offerings meet the industry’s evolving needs.

In mid-December, students from Years 10 to 13, who are currently enrolled in agricultural or vocational courses in local schools, were invited to explore the farm and its facilities. Approximately 160 pupils participated in this initiative, gaining insight into the available courses and hands-on learning opportunities.

Prys Lewis, the newly appointed Manager of Llettytwppa Farm, highlighted the farm’s commitment to offering a comprehensive educational experience. “Looking to the future, our aim and vision is to offer a wide range of opportunities for young people and lifelong learners in Ceredigion to learn traditional skills as well as new skills,” Lewis remarked. “We expect that many will want to take advantage of this excellent opportunity to attend these courses.”

Apprenticeship Programs and Future Plans

Ceredigion Training will introduce two levels of agricultural apprenticeships at Llettytwppa Farm, designed to equip participants with the skills necessary for careers in farming. The Level 2 Foundation Apprenticeship will cater to beginners and those with minimal experience, covering essential subjects such as crop production and livestock care over a period of approximately 24 months.

Learners can then advance to the Level 3 Apprenticeship, intended for individuals with prior experience or a Level 2 qualification. This advanced program focuses on developing skills for roles such as farm manager or agricultural technician, combining hands-on training with tailored learning to meet individual needs.

Courses at Llettytwppa Farm are expected to commence in September 2026, marking a significant step forward in providing educational resources that support the local agricultural community. With this initiative, Ceredigion County Council aims to foster a sustainable future for agriculture in the region, ensuring that young people have the necessary skills to thrive in their communities.
