Bovey Tracey Plans New Primary School by 2029, Awaiting Funding

Bovey Tracey is on track to potentially welcome a new primary school accommodating 420 pupils by 2029, contingent on securing necessary funding. The proposed site for the school is located on land owned by the Bovey Tracey Town Council off Le Molay-Littry Way. This initiative aims to replace an aging 280-pupil campus situated on Abbey Road.

The project has been under discussion for some time but gained momentum after the Teignbridge District Council funded an initial feasibility study conducted by Devon County Council. The study has confirmed that further surveys will be required, expected to last about a year, to gather essential ecological data and provide a more accurate cost estimate for the construction.

In a statement to the town council, Teignbridge District Council emphasized that the completion of this initial feasibility design does not guarantee funding or delivery of the project. The council assured that updates would be shared regarding any decision-making progress. “Delivering a new school is a long-term project. If the surveys, design, permissions, and funding can be secured, delivery of a school may be possible by 2029,” the statement read.

Community Impact and Future Plans

Cllr Sheila Brooke, the mayor of Bovey Tracey, expressed optimism about the project. She highlighted that the new school would not only serve students but also offer additional outdoor facilities for the entire community. “We thank Teignbridge and Devon for their efforts so far and hope we can secure the promise of a new school in advance of any changes that might come about as a result of the Local Government Review,” Cllr Brooke stated.

She further noted, “We’re not counting our chickens but are excited for a positive outcome and we’ll keep residents updated as and when any new information reaches us.” The current school site may be considered for conversion into a housing scheme for older individuals. Cllr Brooke underscored the importance of ensuring that any potential development meets the needs of Bovey Tracey residents rather than those of commercial developers. “That’s a message we’ll repeat loud and clear for as long as it takes,” she added.

The location for the proposed school is strategically positioned opposite the entrance to De Tracey Park and is currently accessed via a track known as Bucks Lane. As Bovey Tracey is recognized as the gateway to Dartmoor, the addition of a new primary school could play a significant role in meeting the educational demands of the growing community.

The ongoing discussions and efforts highlight Bovey Tracey’s commitment to enhancing local infrastructure and supporting its residents while fostering future growth.
