Burger King Withdraws from Oswestry Drive-Thru Plans

Plans for new takeaway units near Oswestry have been altered following the withdrawal of Burger King from a proposed deal. Initially approved by Shropshire Council last year, the development was set to include a drive-thru for Burger King, alongside other outlets such as Costa and Greggs.

The three takeaway units were planned for a site adjacent to the Whittington roundabout along the A5/A483. While Costa and Greggs remain committed to the project, Burger King’s exit has prompted the need for amendments to the existing planning permission. A new application has been submitted, requesting the council to approve the removal of the drive-thru component for one of the units.

A spokesperson for Berrys, representing Evans Enterprise Developments Ltd, stated, “Since the original approval, Burger King has unfortunately dropped out of the deal, and future occupiers are now being explored.” The spokesperson added that potential tenants currently interested in the site are not seeking a drive-thru format.

The proposed changes aim to increase the floor space of the affected unit by utilizing the area originally designated for the drive-thru lane. This adjustment reflects a shift in market interest and tenant preferences as the developers seek to adapt to evolving demands.

The amended planning application is available for public viewing on the Shropshire Council planning portal, under reference number 25/04549/AMP. This development reflects ongoing changes in the retail landscape and the challenges faced by food service chains in adapting to local market conditions.

As the project progresses, both Costa and Greggs continue their commitment to the site, potentially paving the way for a new configuration that meets the expectations of both developers and consumers in the Oswestry area.
