New Saints FC Foundation Urgently Seeks £10,000 for Community Space

UPDATE: The New Saints FC Foundation has officially taken over The Centre Spot, a vital community and youth space in Oak Street, and is urgently requesting a £10,000 contribution from the town council to sustain its operations. This comes as the facility, previously managed by Shropshire Council, grapples with escalating utility costs estimated between £3,500 and £4,000 monthly.

In a letter sent to the town council ahead of its meeting on December 10, 2023, the foundation highlights its commitment to providing essential services, such as housing Obertelli Play Therapy and SoundLives Youth Music within the building. The foundation is also collaborating with OsNosh to utilize the kitchen for creating meals from surplus food, further emphasizing its role in community welfare.

Gill Jones, manager and trustee of the foundation, stated, “We appreciate this is a massive ask partway through the council’s financial year, and hope that councillors understand the impact of the delayed roof repair contract.” The foundation is currently limited in its ability to rent out spaces due to ongoing roof repairs, which are expected to conclude by mid to late February.

The foundation has been proactive in identifying potential funding sources and introducing new initiatives, including a youth café and various support groups. “Numbers are growing on a weekly basis,” Jones noted, referring to the success of the extended opening hours for young people, including Tuesday evening drop-in sessions.

Despite these efforts, the foundation faces an urgent financial “hump” that jeopardizes its capacity to maintain operations. “We have some small funding applications in process and a recent designation as a Warm Welcome hub, which will help with utility costs,” Jones added.

The foundation’s request for the £10,000 contribution aims to bridge the financial gap until more stable revenue streams are secured. “Our ultimate goal is to make this space work for the local community,” Jones emphasized, reflecting the foundation’s commitment to long-term sustainability.

As the town council prepares to discuss the contribution request, the community watches closely. The outcome could determine the future of The Centre Spot and its role in promoting youth and community wellbeing. The council’s decision on this urgent request is anticipated to be a pivotal moment for local residents and stakeholders alike.
