City of London Police Officer Jailed for £50K Burglary, Harassment

URGENT UPDATE: A former City of London Police officer, Christopher Trowton, has been sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for stealing £50,000 during a burglary and harassing his partner. The Kingston Crown Court ruling comes as a shocking revelation about a serving officer who abused his position of trust.

Trowton, aged 39 and residing in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, committed the burglary on May 19, 2022, while off duty, targeting a home in Hampshire. He resigned from the police force on June 27, 2022, just prior to the allegations surfacing. He was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on August 10, 2022, and charged shortly thereafter.

The court heard that Trowton’s actions not only involved the theft but also included harassment of his partner.

“Trowton was fully aware that his actions were unlawful, morally reprehensible and put fear into his victims,”

stated Detective Superintendent Carly Humphreys, Head of the Professional Standards Department at the City of London Police. She emphasized that his “disgraceful criminal behaviour has undoubtedly affected trust and confidence in policing.”

Trowton received a sentence of 43 months for the burglary and 21 weeks for harassment, with the sentences running concurrently. Additionally, a restraining order has been placed against him regarding his harassment victim.

This case raises serious concerns about integrity within the police force and the protection of victims. An accelerated misconduct hearing will occur at the earliest opportunity, and Trowton will be placed on the barred list, preventing him from working in any capacity within law enforcement.

As this story develops, it underscores the urgent need for accountability in policing, especially when officers betray the very trust they are sworn to uphold. Stay tuned for more updates on this troubling case and its implications for public safety.
