Es Devlin Unveils Rotating Library Installation at Miami Art Week

British designer Es Devlin has introduced an innovative installation titled Library of Us at Faena Beach, coinciding with the festivities of Miami Art Week. This captivating structure measures 50 feet in length and features a rotating design that holds 2,500 titles, celebrating the themes of literature, community, and the environment.

The installation, part of the Faena Arts program, stands out with its triangular bookshop adorned by a striking 34-foot-long LED text strip. Every ten minutes, the structure rotates on a metallic base, casting colorful reflections on the nearby water, creating a unique visual experience for visitors.

Guests are invited to engage with the installation by sitting at its two-ring circular table. This interactive element fosters a sense of connection, as visitors can explore different literary passages that change with each rotation. The atmosphere is enriched by a 250-excerpt audio score narrated by Devlin herself, which blends memories, literary fragments, and music into a harmonious soundscape. This immersive experience is designed to resonate with the natural rhythms of the tides.

In collaboration with Penguin Random House, all 2,500 books featured in the installation will be donated to local public libraries, schools, and community organizations in Miami after the installation concludes on December 7, 2023. This initiative emphasizes a commitment to promoting literacy and community engagement, extending the impact of the installation beyond the art week festivities.

As Miami Art Week continues to showcase a variety of artistic expressions, Devlin’s Library of Us offers a serene retreat from the bustling fairground atmosphere, inviting visitors to reflect on the beauty of literature and shared experiences.
