Survey Reveals Brits Lack Knowledge of Solar System Basics

A recent survey has highlighted a significant gap in knowledge among British adults regarding the solar system, revealing that 40 percent are unable to identify the largest planet. The poll, conducted with 2,000 participants, also found that a quarter of respondents are uncertain which planet features rings.

The findings show that 32 percent of participants admitted their understanding of astronomy is lacking. Notably, 38 percent do not know what a supernova is, and one in 100 respondents mistakenly believe that Earth is encircled by rings, similar to Saturn and Uranus. Furthermore, 60 percent would struggle to identify the constellation of the Plough, while 33 percent would have difficulty recognizing Orion’s Belt. Other well-known constellations, such as the Summer Triangle and Little Bear, left 94 percent and 90 percent of respondents puzzled, respectively.

Interest in Astronomy Persists Despite Knowledge Gap

Despite these knowledge gaps, the survey conducted by OnePoll revealed that 73 percent of those surveyed are interested in learning more about the night sky. Additionally, 58 percent take time to observe it. The research was commissioned by Jeep in conjunction with DarkSky UK, as part of a campaign to encourage outdoor stargazing and reduce light pollution.

To promote this initiative, Jeep has launched a concept version of its hybrid all-wheel drive vehicle, the Avenger Stargazer. This model features a smart telescope that can be controlled via a smart device from inside the car, as well as essential stargazing equipment such as red light torches and binoculars. The launch coincided with the start of the Geminid meteor shower, one of the final major meteor showers of 2025.

Kristian Cholmondeley, managing director of Jeep UK, emphasized the importance of outdoor exploration. He stated, “Outdoor exploration and freedom are at the heart of what we do. Through this collaboration, we hope to break down some of the barriers to stargazing.” He also highlighted the role of DarkSky UK in helping individuals locate nearby designated stargazing areas with a downloadable guide.

Challenges to Stargazing Identified

The survey further revealed that 26 percent of adults believe the night sky is not visible from their residences. Despite this, 56 percent of respondents do not fully understand what light pollution entails. Additionally, 53 percent expressed the opinion that local councils should take more action to address the issue in their areas.

The primary barriers preventing increased stargazing among Brits include a lack of appropriate equipment, cited by 39 percent of respondents, and uncertainty about where to go, reported by 17 percent. The study indicated that 60 percent of participants enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and camping, with 49 percent wishing to engage in these pursuits more frequently.

More than half of the respondents indicated that spending time outdoors and connecting with nature enhances their mood (58 percent) and fosters relaxation (58 percent). Furthermore, 55 percent stated that having a vehicle capable of navigating diverse terrains is crucial for outdoor adventures.

Cholmondeley concluded, “The benefits of getting outside and immersing yourself into nature have been well documented. Designed for every environment, the Avenger is ready for city streets, countryside roads, or mountain trails, capturing the authentic spirit of freedom and capability.” He reminded readers that despite the convenience of modern technology, there is much to be learned simply by looking up at the night sky.
