Mechanic Adam Mewton, 23, Dies in Tragic Accident While Assisting Driver

A tragic accident claimed the life of a young mechanic, Adam Mewton, aged 23, when he was crushed beneath his own recovery truck while assisting a stranded driver. The incident occurred on November 22, 2023, on North Walk Hill in Lynton, Devon. Emergency services pronounced Adam dead at the scene, leaving his family and colleagues heartbroken.

Adam, who worked for Field Services Recovery based in Ivybridge, was known for his dedication and hard work. Family members described him as a “deeply loved son, brother, dad, partner, and friend” who made a significant impact on everyone he met. His sister-in-law, Jasmine, has initiated a fundraising campaign to help support his family during this difficult time and to organize a funeral that honors Adam’s passion for vehicles.

Jasmine, a driving instructor from Exmouth, expressed her grief and highlighted Adam’s unwavering commitment to his job. “Adam was the hardest working young lad out there,” she stated. “He never turned down a call on the job—day or night.” The circumstances surrounding the accident, specifically why the vehicle moved while he was recovering another vehicle, remain under investigation.

Adam had a strong connection to his work at Field Services Recovery, where he was responsible for assisting a variety of motorists, including large vehicles and emergency services. Jasmine noted, “He loved his job, and he adored his boss, who he looked up to in so many ways. He was such a strong part of the company.”

Reflecting on their time together, Jasmine recalled teaching Adam to drive a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) a year ago. “He was a pleasure to help,” she said. “Adam never had a bad word to say about anyone, and that showed by the national comments of support his family is receiving.”

The fundraising campaign aims to give Adam the best possible send-off and to support his family, which includes his partner Tegan and their five-year-old son Tyler. Jasmine explained that part of the funds will also go towards completing one of Adam’s personal projects—a Land Rover he was working on. “We want to get it back on the road so Tyler can enjoy it with his uncles, ensuring Adam’s memory lives on,” she added.

In a heartfelt tribute on social media, Field Services Recovery acknowledged Adam’s contributions to the team. “Adam was not only a valued member of our team—he was truly family,” the company stated. “His presence filled every space he entered, and his impact on all of us will remain for a lifetime.”

The company further expressed their support for Adam’s family during this challenging period, emphasizing the profound sense of loss felt by his colleagues.

Jasmine expressed gratitude to the community for their support, stating, “We would like to thank friends and family for all the support during this difficult time and everyone who has already donated to the GoFundMe.” The fundraiser has garnered significant attention, reflecting the strong community ties and the affection many had for Adam.

As preparations for Adam’s funeral continue, it is clear that he will be remembered not just for his work ethic but also for his kindness and the joy he brought to those around him. His family and friends are determined to ensure that his legacy endures, and they remain grateful for the outpouring of support from the public and the recovery community.

For those wishing to contribute, donations can be made through the GoFundMe page set up in Adam’s memory.
