UPDATE: Rhyl High School will close on December 12, 2025, to honor the funeral of beloved teaching assistant Angela Shellis, who tragically passed away. This decision follows the discovery of the 45-year-old mother’s body near football fields in Prestatyn on Friday, October 24. Her son, Tristan Thomas Roberts, 18, has been charged with her murder, with a trial scheduled for next year.
Headteacher Philip Collins announced the closure in a heartfelt letter to parents, stating that the school will be closed to pupils on the day of the funeral to allow staff to pay their respects. “We have received confirmation that the funeral of Ms. Shellis will take place on Friday, December 12. To enable as many staff as possible to attend, I have made the decision to close the school,” he wrote.
In an effort to support students, Collins assured parents that pupils would have access to online work through Google Classrooms. Additionally, students eligible for free school meals will receive grab bags from the school site. “I appreciate this will impact childcare for some families, but I hope you have enough time to make arrangements,” he added.
The school community remains devastated by the loss of Shellis, who joined Rhyl High in 2023. Collins described her as a “valued member of staff” who was “caring and committed.” He expressed the collective sorrow felt by the school and extended thoughts to Shellis’s family and friends as they navigate this difficult time.
“This has been a challenging time for the school, and I thank you in advance for your support,” Collins stated. The school is reaching out to parents to ensure they are informed and prepared for the upcoming closure.
