UPDATE: A significant propane leak caused by a vehicle crash has led to the emergency closure of Route 7A near West Mountain Road, disrupting traffic for over two hours on Saturday night.
At approximately 9:45 p.m. on July 15, 2023, the Vermont State Police received urgent reports of a propane leak from an underground tank at 3345 Route 7A. Officials confirm that a vehicle, reportedly attempting a U-turn, damaged a 500-gallon underground propane tank, triggering the leak. Eyewitnesses suggested it was a tractor-trailer, but Fire Chief Joe Vadakin stated, “The tire marks did not indicate that.”
With nearby homes evacuated, the Shaftsbury Fire Department quickly intervened, deploying a water curtain to control the leak and dissipate the gas. Fire crews from North Bennington, Bennington, and Arlington also responded to the scene, showcasing a coordinated emergency effort.
No injuries have been reported, but the situation remained critical until Suburban Propane arrived to seal the leak and secure the tank. Emergency personnel departed just after midnight, allowing residents to return home safely.
The Vermont State Police are actively investigating the incident but currently lack leads. “This incident remains under investigation,” they stated in a press release. The police are urging anyone with information to contact the VSP Shaftsbury Barracks.
As authorities continue their investigation, residents in the area are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to the incident. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
