At just 20 years old, Shona is balancing an ambitious academic career with a commitment to military service as a reservist in the 6th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (6 SCOTS). A fourth-year student of mechanical engineering at the University of Strathclyde, she spends her weekdays immersed in study and research, while her weekends are dedicated to military training and camaraderie.
Shona’s journey into the military began with her involvement in the University Officers’ Training Corps. Despite lacking prior connections to the military, she was drawn to the structure and teamwork that military life offers. “I fancied giving it a go and seeing what it would be like,” she reflected. This initial curiosity quickly transformed into a passion, leading her to pursue further military training.
Commitment to the Infantry
To join 6 SCOTS as an infanteer, Shona undertook the demanding Combat Infantry Course, a rigorous 16-day program that included field exercises, navigation, and close-quarters battle training. The experience challenged her physically and mentally, but upon completion, she felt immense pride in officially becoming a member of 6 SCOTS. “It was a happy moment,” she recalled.
As one of the few women in her battalion, Shona has experienced an inclusive environment from the outset. “I’ve never been treated any differently,” she stated. The strong sense of camaraderie among her comrades is a key aspect of her military experience. “Everyone looks out for each other, and it makes you want to give your best every single time,” she noted, emphasizing the life-and-death stakes of their training.
Future Aspirations
Balancing university studies with military commitments poses challenges, yet Shona embraces the variety it brings to her life. “It keeps things interesting,” she said. Looking ahead, she aims to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst after graduation, aspiring to become a full-time officer. The prospect of leading soldiers and taking on increased responsibilities greatly appeals to her.
Shona emphasizes that being part of 6 SCOTS involves more than just soldiering. It encompasses qualities such as personal resilience and teamwork, which she believes will serve her well in any future endeavors. “These are qualities I’ll carry with me whatever I do,” she remarked.
By sharing her experiences, Shona hopes to inspire others to consider the reserves as a viable option. “You don’t need to be the strongest or the fastest straight away,” she advised. “You just need to be willing to push yourself to that place and get stuck in.” Her message reflects the inclusive spirit of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, which has been a significant part of the British Army since its formation on March 28, 2006. The regiment has participated in almost every military operation involving the British Army, showcasing its enduring legacy and commitment to service.
