UPDATE: The festive spirit surged through Ellesmere as the highly anticipated Polar Express arrived at the Ellesmere Winter Festival on November 28, 2023. Hundreds gathered to witness Father Christmas delighting families from aboard a stunning replica locomotive, igniting holiday cheer across the town.
The evening kicked off with a dazzling lantern procession, where dozens of children and parents welcomed Santa at the canal wharf. From there, he made his way to hand out gifts at a Christmas grotto in the bustling market hall, creating unforgettable memories for many young attendees.
Local arts group Fizzgigs played a pivotal role in the festivities, crafting the impressive steam engine model and large-scale figures from the beloved 2004 film Polar Express. Children participated in workshops to create their own lanterns, contributing to the enchanting atmosphere.
The town’s Christmas lights were officially illuminated by Mayor Councillor Liz Woodbridge, who expressed gratitude to all those involved in making the festival a success. “It’s a wonderful demonstration of community spirit,” she said, as the lights twinkled above the delighted crowd.
Children from Ellesmere Primary School and a local brass band entertained attendees with festive carols, while a ferris wheel added to the excitement. The market hall and surrounding streets buzzed with life, featuring stalls brimming with food, drinks, and unique gifts.
The Sequel Trust was recognized for its creativity, winning first prize for the best-decorated shop window in the town. Local businesses, cafes, and shops remained open late, inviting everyone to soak up the holiday spirit.
Organized by SY12 Business Enterprise in collaboration with Ellesmere Rotary Club, the carnival committee, and other local organizations, the event has been hailed as a highlight of the festive season, drawing residents together for a night of joy and celebration.
