Community Mourns Major David Richmond, 55, at Packed Cathedral

UPDATE: A packed Rochester Cathedral has just honored Major David Richmond, 55, described as a “one of a kind” Army major taken from his family and community far too soon. Mourners gathered yesterday to pay tribute to the “great warrior,” a beloved figure within the military and local community, following his death on October 9, 2023, after a long illness.

The loss of Major Richmond has left an immense void, with family, friends, and military personnel coming together to celebrate his life and service. Former Rochester and Strood MP Kelly Tolhurst expressed deep sorrow, stating, “There are moments when you are truly moved, and today was one – to see a packed cathedral full of love for a man who was one of a kind.”

Major Richmond, known affectionately as Dykie, was remembered for his charisma, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his comrades and community. Tolhurst emphasized that he was “taken from us far too young,” highlighting the profound impact he made during his extensive military career, which began in 1986 with the 2nd Battalion The Queen’s Regiment.

During the ceremony, attendees reflected on Major Richmond’s exceptional journey, which saw him rise through the ranks to become a respected leader. He proudly led the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment C Company and was honored to command the regiment during the Freedom of Rochester Parade in 2023.

In a tribute shared last month, the regiment described Richmond as a “popular, charismatic and trusted character with a fantastic sense of humour.” His contributions extended beyond military service; he was a devoted father to his son Jack and remained close to his wife Vicky.

As mourners filled the cathedral, the atmosphere was charged with emotion and respect for a man who exemplified integrity and generosity. Major Richmond’s military comrades and local officials alike shared their condolences, emphasizing the shared sense of loss felt across the community.

Moving forward, the military community and local residents are urged to come together to remember Major Richmond’s legacy and the values he stood for. His commitment to service and the bonds he formed will be honored as those he touched continue to share his story and impact.

As the community grieves, plans for memorial events are being discussed to ensure that Major Richmond’s contributions are never forgotten. Those wishing to extend their sympathies can do so through the regiment’s official channels. The outpouring of love and support reflects not only a profound loss but also a celebration of a life dedicated to service and kindness.
