A significant drug bust occurred in Manchester, England, after police were led to a cache of illicit substances by a 10-year-old boy riding on an e-bike. The incident unfolded on November 27, 2023, when a police drone detected the e-bike being operated in a reckless manner around 17:00 GMT. The vehicle was being driven by a man in a balaclava, with the young passenger accompanying him.
The drone unit from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) tracked the e-bike to an address in Tavistock Square, Harpurhey. Upon searching the location, officers discovered a total of 94 wraps containing crack cocaine and heroin, along with a variety of other contraband items.
According to a spokesperson from GMP, the e-bike was observed weaving in and out of traffic and even mounting the pavement as it was driven dangerously. The drone unit played a crucial role in monitoring the situation and pinpointing the address where the drugs were ultimately found.
In addition to the drugs, officers seized multiple smart whip canisters, a machete, a small quantity of cannabis, cash, and mobile phones. A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, as well as possession of Class B drugs. He is currently in custody for questioning.
Police Response to E-Bike Misuse
GMP’s North Manchester Neighbourhood Team has been actively addressing the anti-social use of e-bikes in the area. They are working alongside specialized teams from the drone unit to respond swiftly to reported issues.
“This operation has resulted in an arrest and multiple drugs being seized, which is a great result for the local neighbourhood team,” stated Inspector Dan Pickavance from GMP’s Harpurhey Neighbourhood Team. He acknowledged the community’s concerns regarding the dangerous use of off-road bikes and similar vehicles.
The police have launched proactive patrols to enhance community safety. Their efforts come as part of a broader initiative to combat the dangerous use of e-bikes, which has been reported as a growing concern among local residents. Inspector Pickavance emphasized the importance of these operations, stating, “We have subsequently launched proactive patrols to tackle them and provide reassurance to people who are fed up with how they are being used.”
As GMP continues its efforts to address these issues, they are committed to increasing patrols and maintaining a strong presence in the community throughout the winter months, as part of Operation North Star. The operation aims to ensure the safety of residents and reduce instances of drug-related crime in the North Manchester area.
