URGENT UPDATE: New Zealand’s largest airline, Air New Zealand, has issued an immediate travel alert as cabin crew unions announce a potential strike on December 8. The strike is scheduled to occur between 05:00 am and 11:00 pm on December 8, affecting the airline’s regional fleets, including De Havilland Canada Dash 8-300 and ATR 72-600 aircraft. These planes play a crucial role in connecting major airports like Auckland Airport, Wellington Airport, and Christchurch to smaller cities across New Zealand. Additional disruptions are anticipated for the international fleet, including Airbus A320 and Boeing 777-300ER services, from 12:01 am to 11:59 pm on the same day.
Currently, no flights have been canceled, as Air New Zealand is actively engaging in negotiations to avert the strike. Rachel Mackintosh, National Secretary of E tū, stated, “Cabin crew have gone above and beyond for Air New Zealand and for the travelling public. If the company wants to reach a settlement, they need to make real changes to their position.” The union represents approximately 1,250 members who are demanding improved working conditions and fair pay after months of stalled negotiations.
