Since the release of the initial trailer for Captain America: Brave New World, fans have found themselves pondering the identical question. Not “When will we see Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk smash?” but rather:
“Who is Giancarlo Esposito portraying?” After portraying Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian, it was clear he would play a villain in this role.
Thanks to Marvel’s Hall H Captain America panel at Comic-Con, we now have precise knowledge of which one.
Prepare to encounter Sidewinder, folks. Indeed, Esposito is confirmed to play the part of the King in the Serpent Society in the next installment of the Cap franchise directed by Julius Onah.
For individuals unfamiliar with the comics, Sidewinder, also known as Seth Voelker, leads the Serpent Society, a group of supervillains with snake themes. Throughout the years, the team has collaborated with Kingpin, Hydra, and others, with their ties to Marvel’s Captain America dating back to issue #310 in 1985.
However, it is not yet known if Esposito will wear a comic-accurate reptilian ruff while taking on the role of Sidewinder. However, based on the film’s political thriller theme and Esposito’s appearance in the trailer with sunglasses and a gun, we assume it is improbable!
Some fans may remember that a movie based on the Serpent Society was mentioned at Comic-Con in 2014 by Kevin Feige during the title announcement of the third Captain America movie as Captain America: Serpent Society, but it was ultimately changed to Captain America: Civil War.
It will be intriguing to observe how Sidewinder fits into the structure of Brave New World and the broader MCU in the future, especially following Robert Downey Jr.’s surprise Doctor Doom announcement at the end of Marvel’s SDCC event.
Watching this unfold in the weeks and months ahead will be captivating. As fans in San Diego are treated to a sneak peek of Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross/Red Hulk in a new teaser revealed exclusively at Comic-Con, we can expect to uncover more details about Anthony Mackie’s debut as Cap on the big screen as the release date of February 14, 2025 approaches.
